Buku Pustaka Basa Jawa (Buku Jabal) is a novel written by Lie Ratna Dewi. It tells the story of how Lusia, the protagonist, moves from Java to North Sumatra to work as an interpreter. When she arrives in her new home, she is surprised by how difficult it has become for her to communicate with the locals and adjust to life there. This book provides insight into Indonesian society and culture through its main character Lusia’s eyes. It shows how hard it is for her to adapt to a new environment and makes us sympathize with her struggles. It also gives us an insight into the historical changes in Indonesia in colonial times through the depictions of natives in this book. In the book, the story is told from Lusia's perspective because Ratna Dewi wanted to show that even though Lusia had lived in Java, she was still a native. Ratna Dewi wanted to tell how much importance Javanese always attach to their home region and remind readers that there are many different ways of looking at things by introducing Lusia's character because she was a native North Sumatran who thought differently from a Javanese character. The North Sumatrans also have a different way of looking at things than Javanese do, and by the narrator's story the readers can understand that. The norms and values of those native to North Sumatra are illustrated in this novel as well as the Javanese culture because Lusia has a hard time adapting to her new environment and she feels like an outsider due to the differences in cultures and norms between Javanese and North Sumatran culture.
The novel was adapted into an Indonesian film released in 2009.
